AWS just made a real push to own AI-assisted coding in government environments. Kiro, its agentic IDE, now runs Claude Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 5 inside AWS GovCloud, and it ships with per-user telemetry, prompt logging, and usage dashboards stored in the customer's own account. That audit infrastructure is doing as much work here as the models themselves. Regulated agencies won't touch agentic coding tools without it, and AWS just removed the main objection.

AWS has expanded its Kiro IDE and CLI, an agentic coding environment, to support two new Anthropic models in AWS GovCloud (US) regions, which serve government and regulated workloads. Claude Opus 4.8 is positioned as the most capable Opus model, featuring self-verification, more efficient tool calling, long-horizon task follow-through, and a 1M-token context window at a 2.2x credit multiplier. Claude Sonnet 5, described as the most 'agentic' Sonnet, approaches Opus 4.8 on reasoning and agentic coding benchmarks at lower cost (1.3x credit multiplier), giving developers a cost-vs-accuracy trade-off dial.
Alongside the model additions, Kiro now includes enterprise-grade User Activity Monitoring: a usage dashboard, per-user daily CSV telemetry exported to S3 (covering credits, model usage, etc.), and optional prompt logging for compliance and debugging. All of it is stored in the customer's own AWS account at no extra charge beyond S3 storage. The combination of frontier agentic models and built-in audit tooling signals AWS's intent to push AI coding agents into security-sensitive government environments.
